Overview:

The first game world in Demon Defense is split up into 4 playable sections or levels; a park, mansion, gas station and a small group of homes. Early on in play testing we learned that if we wanted to keep the open world feel of our game we needed each level to feel similar to the others but be unique. This way the players would be able to quickly identify where in the world they were and what resources they would find there.

To make the Gas Station level feel different than the other areas in the world I used mostly concrete textures and all the buildings look the same and share the same color schemes.

Level Design & Building:

Create level concept and theme.
Design and build new terrain geometry, create and apply textures, decals etc.
Re-use game models and textures for decoration, cover, etc.
Light the level using baked and dynamic lighting.
Create and design landmarks to help guide and orient players.

Combat:

Place cover in interesting ways to provide multiple combat zones.
Place AI paths.
Balance combat encounters into waves to to help the players feel they are close to being over run but also able to keep the upper hand.
Enemy spawn points.
Cover objects placement.

Combat flow description:

The enemy paths in the Gas station are very even with equal choke points and combat zones leading to the second fall back position and finally a large combat zone by the APD. The advantage of the gas station level is in the Combat zones by the APD The players have two large combat zones where they can make a heavy last stand if the enemies are able to push them back that far.
